The North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T) received a $600,000 Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the 1890 Institution Capacity Building Grants program (CFDA #10.216). The grant aims to develop, expand, and enhance food allergy research, teaching, and outreach opportunities for students and educators. Specifically, NC A&T will create new courses on food allergy principles for food and agricultural sciences students and develop food-grade research strategies for safer controlled oral immunotherapy and peanut desensitization. The university expects these efforts will increase awareness of food allergies within the agricultural workforce and support innovative immunotherapy approaches. As part of the project, NC A&T is partnering with North Carolina State University (NCSU). NCSU will direct all research aspects, including acquiring plant compounds, isolating and purifying proanthocyanidins, and characterizing allergen binding and changes in protein structure. NCSU aims to deliberately modify binding strengths for peanut protein-flavonoid treatments and evaluate modulation of mast cell degranulation. The three-year grant period began May 1, 2023 and is scheduled to conclude on April 30, 2026.
