The award supports research to evaluate nutritional optima for pollen protein-to-lipid (P:L) ratios across multiple bumble bee species in the United States and assess how these preferences...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Florida's Division of Sponsored Research received a $299,319 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310), effective May 1, 2026 through April 30, 2028. This seed project will generate primary research data and deliverables investigating bee diversity, foraging preferences, and nutritional assessment within...
- Federal Grant Award Summary This $797,762 National Science Foundation (NSF) Biological Sciences (CFDA 47.074) project grant awarded to Mississippi State University on September 1, 2026, develops and implements non-lethal artificial intelligence (AI)-based monitoring technologies for tracking native bee pollinators in managed forests. The primary deliverable is an integrated system combining acoustic sensors and camera-based AI to automatically identify pollinator species in real time,...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $1,000,000 Project Grant under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) program to Cornell University. The grant, awarded on April 1, 2024, will fund the development of an affordable method for farmers to grow non-crop plants that nurture essential insects, such as butterflies, bees, and ladybugs, required for efficient food production. The key product to be developed is a multi-seed pellet containing a diverse set of plant...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Utah State University received a $749,984 Project Grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310), effective August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2030. The grant funds research to advance pesticide risk assessment methodologies for solitary bee species, specifically alfalfa leafcutting bees and alkali bees, which serve as critical pollinators for alfalfa seed crops. The...
- This $1,791,864 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) will support research to understand how landscape context and configuration interact with on-farm practices to shape pollinator supply, and how social, institutional, and environmental factors influence farmers' ability and interest in collective action to address pollinator declines. The research will be conducted by Cornell University, with sub-awards to the Centre for...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Environmental Biology has awarded the University of Oregon $874,361 under the Biological Sciences (CFDA 47.074) Program for a five-year project grant running from September 1, 2025, through August 31, 2030. This CAREER award will deliver a comprehensive longitudinal study examining how plant-pollinator interactions have changed over the past 50 years across multiple California ecosystems. The research team will revisit historical study sites...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary The University of California, Berkeley received a $425,116 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Integrative Organismal Systems under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074), effective September 1, 2025 through August 31, 2028. This research initiative, titled "PlantTransform: Defining the Mechanisms Responsible for the Recalcitrance of Cultivated Sunflower to Transformation and Tissue Regeneration," aims to...
** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** SILPHIUM INTEGRIFOLIUM (SILFLOWER) IS A NATIVE NORTH AMERICAN PRAIRIE PLANT, UNDERGOING DOMESTICATION BY THE LAND INSTITUTE (TLI) AS A PERENNIAL OILSEED CROP, WHICH ATTRACTS DOZENS OF POLLINATOR SPECIES AND HAS AN ANTICIPATED POTENTIAL FOR INCREASED HONEY PRODUCTION. THIS IS MAINLY DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT BLOOMS LATE, FROM MID-SUMMER TO AUTUMN, WHEN FORAGE FOR HONEYBEES TENDS TO BE MORE SCARCE. CENTRAL STATE UNIVERSITY (CSU), IN COLLABORATION WITH TLI, PROPOSE TO TEST THE ABILITY OF A SILFLOWER AS A PERENNIAL CROP IN OHIO. IT IS HYPOTHESIZED THAT INTEGRATED SILFLOWER PRODUCTION WITH MANAGED HONEYBEES WILL INCREASE THE PRODUCTION OF HONEY, AS WELL AS LEAD TO A HIGHER YIELD OF SEED FROM THE CROP. WITH SUPPORT FROM TLI, TEST PLOTS WILL BE SET UP AT CSU'S RESEARCH STATION AND MIRROR SITES, BOTH WITH AND WITHOUT HONEYBEE HIVES. PROJECT PARTNER SITES INCLUDE REGENERATIVE FARMING OPERATIONS AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES. MANAGED HONEYBEES NOT IN THE VICINITY OF THE SILFLOWER PLOTS WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE STUDY FOR COMPARISON. ADDITIONAL FARMS WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE STUDY, BOTH WITH AND WITHOUT HONEYBEES. CSU AND TLI WILL COMBINE CROP, HONEYBEE, SOCIAL, AND ECONOMIC DATA GATHERED THROUGH THE PROJECT, WHICH WILL BE USED TO INFORM MIDWESTERN FARMERS AND BEEKEEPERS ON THE BENEFITS OF PERENNIAL CROPS FOR IMPROVING YIELDS AND PROFITS, WHILE INCREASING THE SUSTAINABILITY OF BOTH INDUSTRIES. SCIENTISTS WILL EXCHANGE BETWEEN INSTITUTIONS FOR CAPACITY BUILDING AND RESULTS WILL BE USED TO DEVELOP TOPICS FOR CONTINUING COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS.
