This $1,000,000 project grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) federal grant program (CFDA #10.310) will fund development of an adaptable framework called CAMRADES to connect antimicrobial resistance, agricultural decisions, and environmental systems. Iowa State University will integrate predictive models of antimicrobial transport and associated human health risk into the framework. The university will characterize antimicrobial and resistance gene transport via surface and subsurface pathways in agro-ecosystems. Researchers will assess associated human health risks from transport of antimicrobial resistance through agricultural environments and identify optimal mitigation strategy combinations. $250,000 in subawards were provided to the University at Buffalo and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to support analytical testing, data collection, modeling, and outreach components of the project. The award period is January 15, 2022 through January 14, 2027.
