Oklahoma State University will receive $300,000 from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive federal grants program to study methods for mitigating necrotic enteritis in poultry. Specifically, the university will compare the gut microbiota of necrotic enteritis-resistant and susceptible chicken breeds when subjected to the disease. Fecal microbiota from resistant and susceptible chickens will be transplanted into naive chickens to assess efficacy in alleviating necrotic enteritis. Selected gut bacteria and metabolites associated with resistance will also be inoculated into naive chickens to determine their role in mitigation. The project aims to demonstrate proof-of-concept for a novel, antibiotic-free microbiome-based approach to alleviating necrotic enteritis and potentially other enteric diseases in poultry. The two-year project period will conclude in May 2024.
