The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded New Mexico State University a $750,000 Project Grant under the Integrated Programs CFDA 10.303 program. The grant will support NMSU's project "Expanding Organic Systems to Reduce Water Demand and Increase Agricultural Resilience in the Southwest" from September 1, 2022 to August 31, 2026.
As part of NIFA's Integrated Programs, which provide support for integrated research, education, and extension activities on important agricultural issues, NMSU will conduct applied research and an associated extension program to develop new organic farming practices tailored to the arid Southwest. The university aims to demonstrate how organic methods can reduce farmers' water usage while increasing their operations' resilience to drought conditions through crop diversification and other strategies. Outreach to producers and other stakeholders will disseminate the project's findings on adapting organic techniques for water-limited areas.
