The County of Yolo, California was awarded a $1,000,000 project grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP) to administer the Bonus Bucks Program. The Bonus Bucks Program will provide nutrition education and a 50% incentive for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) households in Yolo County to purchase qualifying fruits and vegetables from participating retailers. Households, which must be under 130% of the federal poverty level to qualify for SNAP, will receive the incentive immediately at the point of sale using a Bonus Bucks card when purchasing eligible products with their SNAP benefits. The County of Yolo's Health and Human Services Agency will oversee administration of the four-year project and conduct periodic surveys to evaluate the effectiveness of outreach, education, and incentive efforts in increasing SNAP households' purchase and consumption of fruits and vegetables.
