The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) awarded Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) $500,000 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) federal grant program to support an agricultural education, extension, and research experience for undergraduate fellows from March 15, 2021 to March 14, 2026. The project will provide hands-on research experience in sustainable pest and pollinator management within urban gardens, an area of increasing interest. Fellows will gain skills in communicating scientific findings and best practices to stakeholders through education and outreach. In collaboration with Purdue Extension, fellows and IWU students will conduct workshops to share results with Indiana community gardeners and high school students. The project aims to increase access to healthy foods and address local food insecurity issues by supporting urban garden growth and knowledge transfer.
