Washington State University will receive $499,962 under a five-year Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture to develop an experiential learning and training program focused on crop resiliency to heat and drought. The grant, awarded under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program, will support establishment of a summer internship program engaging ten undergraduate students annually in laboratory and field research exploring crop adaptation mechanisms. Interns will gain experience in foundational and applied crop science disciplines like biochemistry, genetics and physiology while also participating in extension activities such as workshops and meetings with commodity groups. The program aims to strengthen partnerships between Washington State University and neighboring institutions to increase participation of underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students in crop research and extension careers.
