The Economic Development Administration of the Department of Commerce awarded Colorado Mesa University $1,402,458 under the Economic Adjustment Assistance program on September 29, 2021. This Project Grant will provide medical and therapeutic equipment, mobile simulation technology, and funding for personnel and programming to support workforce development in healthcare fields for communities in western Colorado impacted by changes in the coal economy. Specifically, Colorado Mesa University's Physician's Assistant, Physical Therapy, and Occupational Therapy degree programs will be equipped to support academic programming, professional development, and outreach to displaced coal workers and their families. This aims to increase access to specialized healthcare career training and recruitment in the university's rural, frontier, and underserved service region. The grant was made possible through regional economic development planning led by the Associated Governments of Northwest Colorado.
