Environmental Protection Agency Region 10 awarded Quinault Indian Nation $800,000 under the Diesel Emission Reduction Act (DERA) National Grants program (CFDA 66.039) on January 1, 2026, to repower one marine vessel operating in the Quinault fishing fleet.
The recipient will replace one Tier 0 propulsion engine and two Tier 0 auxiliary engines with three Tier 3 diesel engines, along with compatible marine gear and ancillary components including keel coolers. The project is designed to reduce diesel particulate matter, NOx, and exposure to diesel air toxics affecting the fishing fleet and Taholah residents on the Quinault Reservation in Washington.
The anticipated lifetime outcomes include reductions of 38.1 short tons in CO2 emissions, 3,388 short tons in fuel usage, 22.1 percent reduction in PM2.5 emissions, and 36.5 percent reduction in NOx emissions. No sub-recipients are included in this assistance agreement. Performance occurs on the Quinault Reservation, Washington, with an ultimate completion date of December 31, 2027.
