The Gonzaga University Center for the Climate, Society, and the Environment received a $135,464 Project Grant award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 10 under the agency's Environmental Education Grants Program (CFDA #66.951). The grant will support the Climate Literacy Project to design and implement environmental education practices and techniques to increase climate literacy among 50 middle school teachers and over 5,000 students in seven counties in Northeast Washington. Key deliverables include professional development workshops for educators on teaching climate science concepts locally and optimistically, as well as hands-on climate literacy activities delivered by Gonzaga undergraduate fellows to 15 classrooms, including six Title I schools, reaching 400 additional students. Five $25,000 subawards to local nonprofits will support complementary activities focused on climate change effects and solutions. Anticipated outcomes include improved teacher competence and confidence in climate education alongside increased student awareness, knowledge, and pro-environmental behaviors among participants.
