The Santa Fe Indian School, Inc. was awarded a $19,994,586 Project Grant from the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Environmental and Climate Justice Community Change Grants Program (CFDA 66.616) to implement the school's 2023 campus vision plan. The project aims to mitigate campus flooding and erosion, assess greenhouse gas emissions and clean energy opportunities, improve outdoor education spaces, integrate edible landscaping and agriculture, enhance traffic flow, and promote health by reducing exposure to pollutants. Key deliverables include 1,500 shade trees/shrubs, 8 stormwater bioswales, 2 acres of hydrological improvements, 1,500 feet of walkways, new HVAC chillers, 13 energy/HVAC audits, 6 kW of solar repairs, 500 traditional food plants, and workforce development training for 60 youth/adults. The Trust for Public Land will manage the project and hire consultants to support the school's capacity. The award, effective January 1, 2025, aims to address the school's climate and environmental challenges while fulfilling its educational mission for disadvantaged Native American students.
