The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 4 awarded the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) a $1,111,111 Project Grant under the Leaking Underground Storage Tank Trust Fund Corrective Action Program (CFDA #66.805). The grant will support SCDHEC's implementation of corrective actions to determine the source and extent of contamination at underground storage tank sites in South Carolina. Key activities include overseeing and enforcing responsible party cleanups when owners are unwilling or unable; responding to petroleum releases when prompt action is needed to protect human health and the environment; and recovering costs from unwilling responsible parties. SCDHEC will also work to reduce its backlog of 165 leaking underground storage tank cleanups by initiating and completing more cleanups. Expected outcomes include controlling risks posed by accidental or intentional releases and cleaning up contaminated sites to make land ready for reuse. The grant period is from October 1, 2021 to September 30, 2023.
