The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) will receive $350,000 from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 5 under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) federal grant program to assess perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) contamination in fish tissue along Illinois' Lake Michigan border from July 2021 through June 2024. Specifically, IEPA and its project partners will collect approximately 100 composite fish tissue samples from 20 existing sampling stations in Lake Michigan harbors and basins. The samples will be analyzed at the IEPA laboratory to measure PFOS concentrations and support issuing fish consumption advisories as needed. Additionally, the project will conduct outreach and education to inform the public about risks and benefits of eating fish from these areas. The GLRI program aims to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Great Lakes Basin Ecosystem.
