THE KENTUCKY ENERGY ENVIRONMENT CABINET, DEPARTMENT FOR NATURAL RESOURCES, DIVISION OFABANDONED MINE LANDS IS AUTHORIZED TO ABATE OR CONTROL THE ADVERSE EFFECT OF PAST COAL MINING INACCORDANCE WITH TITLE IV OF PUBLIC LAW 95-87. THE ENCLOSED GRANT REQUEST IS FOR FUNDING TO ADMINISTERTHE ABANDONED MINE LANDS (AML) RECLAMATION PROGRAM FOR THREE (3) YEARS.FUNDING WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED BY MEANS OF A PROGRAM GRANT BETWEEN THE OFFICE OFSURFACE MINING RECLAMATION AND ENFORCEMENT AND THE KENTUCKY ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT CABINETWHICH WILL PROVIDE THE CABINET REIMBURSEMENT FOR PROJECT COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE PROGRAM.THE PROPOSED GRANT WILL ENABLE THE DIVISION OF ABANDONED MINE LANDS TO ADMINISTER THEABANDONED MINE LAND RECLAMATION PROGRAM, WHICH WILL REDUCE OR ELIMINATE THE HAZARDSASSOCIATED WITH PAST MINING ACTIVITIES. IN ADDITION,THE DIVISION WILL BEGIN ASSEMBLING THE NECESSARY INVENTORY DATA, SITE INVESTIGATION, ENVIRONMENTALASSESSMENTS, ELIGIBILITY DATA, AND CONSTRUCTION ESTIMATES FOR PROJECTS THAT ARE TO BE INCLUDED IN THE GRANT.
