The AMLR program, authorized under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, aims to protect public health, safety, and property from extreme dangers posed by abandoned coal mines. With this May 2023 award, the DEQ plans to reclaim hundreds of abandoned mine sites across Montana that qualify for AMLR funding support. Reclamation activities will help alleviate risks to public health and safety as well as reduce environmental impacts from unregulated historic mining operations.
