The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) awarded a $5,622,000 Formula Grant under the Federal Transit Formula Grants program (CFDA 20.507) to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) on September 18, 2024. The purpose of this grant is to supplement TIGER and 5307 funds for the construction of the Pawtucket/Central Falls Commuter Rail Station project. The CMAQ and STBG funds will be used for track and catenary construction activities, including relocation of existing mainline tracks, construction of a new freight track, and installation of new steel portals, cabling, and other catenary infrastructure. The total project budget has increased from $45,332,376 to $53,106,203, with this additional Formula Grant funding expected to ensure the completion of the construction project. The new commuter rail station will enhance local mobility, increase access to regional jobs, and support economic development in the Pawtucket and Central Falls communities.
