This $66,114,000 federal Formula Grant award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Small and Underserved Communities Emerging Contaminants Grant Program (CFDA 66.442) will fund the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) to implement a comprehensive program to address emerging contaminants, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), in the state's small and disadvantaged communities.
The key activities supported by this award include planning, design, and construction of treatment systems to remove emerging contaminants from drinking water; public outreach, education, and community engagement; and technical assistance to support public water systems in complying with Safe Drinking Water Act requirements. NJDEP will sub-award portions of the grant funding to eligible communities to carry out these critical projects, which aim to reduce public health risks and ensure equitable access to safe, clean drinking water across the state. The grant performance period runs from May 1, 2024 to April 30, 2029.
