The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded a $335,440 Formula Grant under the State and Tribal Indoor Radon Grants program (CFDA 66.032) to the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (Maine DHHS). The purpose of this grant is to provide radon risk reduction through increased radon testing, mitigation, and radon-resistant new construction in Maine. Key activities include implementing a state radon program to support projects in homes, schools, and other buildings; designing public outreach and education programs; providing training and technical support; expanding radon testing and mitigation; and identifying best practices for radon-resistant construction and building codes. The anticipated deliverables include increasing the number of homes with operating mitigation systems, measuring and mitigating radon in public schools and daycare facilities, and expanding the number of qualified radon professionals. The intended outcome is to broaden awareness of radon risks and expand access to radon services to decrease exposure and lung cancer risk for Maine residents. The grant period runs from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025.
