This Cooperative Agreement, awarded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) under the Measurement and Engineering Research and Standards (CFDA 11.609) Federal Grant Program, is focused on developing indicators that enable decision-makers to understand how their choices impact product management at the end of product life cycles. The $171,849 project aims to promote the closure of product/material loops by creating data-driven models and advanced time-related indicators...
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) awarded a $5,500,000 Congressionally-Identified Projects (CFDA 11.617) grant to the University of Southern Mississippi to establish a comprehensive program for sustainable materials validation and certification. The key products and services to be delivered under this 1-year project grant include: Developing and delivering a "Material Sustainability Certification Program" with online and hands-on training to create a skilled...
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) received a $572,065 Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 under the Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling (SWIFR) Grant Program (CFDA 66.920). The funding will support two key activities: IDEM will develop a statewide Materials Management Plan that shifts the state's approach from a focus on recycling and disposal to one that emphasizes reducing the environmental impact of material...
Rstream Recycling LLC received a $275,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships program (CFDA 47.084) to develop an autonomous waste sorting platform. The platform aims to improve landfill diversion and recycling rates for non-industrial waste streams at high-traffic venues like stadiums, universities, airports, and theme parks. Currently, waste sorting at these facilities is done manually or through expensive robotic...
This $142,901 Cooperative Agreement awarded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) under the Measurement Science and Engineering (MSE) Research Grant Program (CFDA 11.609) supports research at Purdue University to develop measurements and indicators that allow decision-makers to optimize the circularity of materials within product life cycles. The key activities include developing lifecycle models for engines and server assemblies to identify circularity challenges and...
This $289,851 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Integrative Activities (IA) program supports research at the University of Delaware that aims to develop new pathways for the recovery and recycling of rare-earth elements (REEs). The project focuses on investigating the formation and properties of high-temperature REE-sulfate liquids, with the goal of advancing alternative REE extraction and separation technologies that could enable more circular manufacturing...
This Cooperative Agreement award, with a total funding amount of $163,345, was provided by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) under the Measurement and Engineering Research and Standards (CFDA 11.609) Federal Grant Program. The purpose of this project is to address limitations of the product circularity assessment method identified through industry case studies, in order to make it more robust and improve decision-making during the product development process for...
The Department of Energy (DOE) awarded a $67,314,320 Cooperative Agreement to Real Alloy Recycling, LLC under the Clean Energy Demonstrations program (CFDA 81.255) to design, construct, and operate a closed-loop salt slag recycling unit at their aluminum recycling facility in Wabash, Indiana. The project aims to divert approximately 70% of the facility's salt slag waste from landfills and instead produce marketable products such as flux, aluminum oxide, ammonium sulfate, and reusable hydrogen....
This $2,000,000 Project Grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Reduce, Reuse, Recycling Education and Outreach (CFDA 66.921) program will fund a comprehensive recycling outreach and education campaign led by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus in Northeastern Illinois. The three-year initiative aims to increase waste prevention activities, boost recycling participation rates, and reduce contamination in the recycling stream across 275 municipalities and 7 counties. ISRI WILL UPDATE ITS SPECIFICATIONS, CREATE NEW INTERACTIVE, ON-LINE SCRAP SPECIFICATION RESOURCES, AND SUPPORT EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH TO INFORM STAKEHOLDERS ABOUT INDUSTRY STANDARDS AND BEST PRACTICES. CURRENTLY PUBLISHED IN THE ISRI SCRAP SPECIFICATIONS CIRCULAR (WWW.ISRI.ORG/SPECS), THE SPECIFICATIONS SERVE BOTH AS BROAD GUIDELINES AND AS A STARTING POINT IN DISCUSSIONS BETWEEN SCRAP BUYERS AND SELLERS DOMESTICALLY AND GLOBALLY AND ARE ALWAYS SUBJECT TO NEGOTIATION BETWEEN BUYER AND SELLER. ISRI IS UNDERTAKING A WHOLESALE REVIEW OF THE SPECIFICATIONS IN ORDER TO CREATE A HARMONIZATION OF THE TERMINOLOGY USED ACROSS ALL COMMODITIES AND TO CONVERT THE CIRCULAR TO A DYNAMIC, SEARCHABLE, INTERACTIVE, AND USER-FRIENDLY ONLINE RESOURCE. WE EXPECT THE NEW RESOURCE TO BE EASILY UNDERSTOOD BOTH BY THE INDUSTRY AS WELL AS GOVERNMENT ENTITIES THAT ARE TAKING AN INCREASING ROLE IN AFFIRMING THE QUALITY OF SCRAP IMPORTED INTO THEIR COUNTRIES.
