Award Recipient: University of North Dakota, Division of Research & Economic Development Funding Agency & Program: Department of Energy, Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, Fossil Energy Research and Development Program (CFDA 81.089) Award Details: $21.45 million | Awarded July 1, 2026 | Performance Period: July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2031 | Location: Grand Forks, North Dakota The University of North Dakota will enhance its existing engineering-scale carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and conversion test center to accelerate the development and validation of advanced carbon capture technologies. The augmented facility will expand testing capacity to simultaneously host multiple CO2 capture and conversion technologies and support continuous, 24-hour engineering-scale test campaigns operating under representative power plant conditions. The test center will generate flue gas derived from coal or natural gas combustion with CO2 concentrations between 4 percent and 15 percent, or as otherwise required by specific testing protocols. This infrastructure improvement will enable rapid, cost-effective evaluation of the technical efficacy of advanced carbon capture systems under operationally relevant conditions, supporting the Department of Energy's mission to minimize environmental and climate impacts of fossil fuel processes while advancing net-zero emissions objectives. The enhanced test center will serve as a critical validation resource for carbon capture technologies targeting both power generation and industrial applications.Federal Cooperative Agreement Summary
