- This federal Project Grant award, funded by the Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy under the Renewable Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.087), aims to (1) characterize and leverage two existing open-source wave energy conversion systems (WECs) for long-term use by the marine energy community; (2) demonstrate co-design informed pathways to hardware selection and levelized cost of energy (LCOE) reduction for two distinct WEC morphologies; and (3)...
- This $1,000,000 Project Grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy under the Renewable Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.087) supports the technology development and end-to-end laboratory testing and integration of open-source Wave Energy Conversion Systems (WECS) with a novel Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) docking and recharging system. The key technological developments include: (1) full system performance analysis of...
- This $500,000 Project Grant award from the Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) under the Renewable Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.087) is aimed at designing, constructing, and testing 12 prototype systems for wave energy converters, marine current turbines, and grid integration systems. The project, awarded to Florida Atlantic University, will provide in-depth training to 24 undergraduate students to prepare them for careers in the...
- This $115,907 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Integrative Activities program (CFDA 47.083) aims to drive research convergence on ocean wave energy conversion for powering remote coastal communities. The project, awarded to East Carolina University, will develop a convergence roadmap, screen and down-select 2-3 lead wave energy converter (WEC) design concepts, and investigate the leading designs through transdisciplinary co-design and optimization. The research...
- This $222,606 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Integrative Activities (CFDA 47.083) program aims to drive convergence of ocean wave energy research for empowering remote coastal communities. The 5-year project, beginning September 2024, brings together a multidisciplinary team from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech) to develop a roadmap and screen leading wave energy converter (WEC) design concepts. Through...
- This Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (CFDA 81.087 Renewable Energy Research and Development) provides $499,967.00 to the University of Houston System to develop curricular materials, establish an experimental learning program in marine energy, cultivate an industry engagement framework, and conduct stakeholder outreach and engagement related to marine energy and environmental resilience. The award period is from October 1,...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (CFDA 81.087 Renewable Energy Research and Development) provides $100,000 to support two annual cohorts of VentureWell's ASCEND program, a 10-week hybrid investment readiness training focused on pre-seed startups in the marine energy and hydropower sectors. The program will deliver tailored training, follow-on coaching, and access to non-dilutive funds to assist these startups...
THE INTENT OF THIS PROJECT IS TO LEVERAGE THE EXISTING PROGRAMS AT THE PACIFIC MARINE ENERGY CENTER (PMEC) AND ACCELERATE THE TRANSITION OF MARINE ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES TO MARKET THROUGH: 1) STRENGTHENING WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT, 2) DEVELOPING A STRATEGIC VISION AND OPERATING STRATEGY (IN COORDINATION WITH THE WATER POWER TECHNOLOGIES OFFICE (WPTO)), 3) CONDUCTING RESEARCH THAT WILL ADDRESS THE DEMONSTRATED NEEDS OF THE MARINE ENERGY INDUSTRY, AND 4) IMPROVING INFRASTRUCTURE THAT WILL HAVE A MATERIAL IMPACT ON THE ABILITY OF THE MARINE ENERGY INDUSTRY TO CONDUCT HIGH QUALITY RESEARCH. COMPLETION OF THE TECHNICAL TASKS WILL ENABLE DOE TO ADVANCE MARINE ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES TO MARKET THROUGH: - ESTABLISHING A COMPREHENSIVE MARINE ENERGY CURRICULUM IN COLLABORATION WITH ALL THE NMECS THAT STRENGTHENS KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE; BUILDING THE CURRENT AND FUTURE U.S. WORKFORCE NEEDED TO SUPPORT THE MARINE ENERGY INDUSTRY. - LEADING COLLABORATIONS ACROSS THE NMECS AND THE UNIVERSITY MARINE ENERGY RESEARCH COMMUNITY (UMERC) THROUGH CLARIFYING PMEC'S UNIQUE EXPERTISE WITHIN THE NMECS AND DEVELOPING A STRATEGIC VISION AND OPERATING STRATEGY. - RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT THAT SUPPORTS CURRENT AND FUTURE INDUSTRY NEEDS. - IMPROVING INFRASTRUCTURE TO MEET THE TESTING NEEDS OF MARINE ENERGY DEVELOPERS.
