The University of Hawaii (UH) and Hawaii Ocean Power Solutions LLC (HOPS) will build upon their prior work on the Halona oscillating water column wave energy converter (Halona WEC) to...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $255,052 Project Grant to Neptunya Ocean Power LLC through the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships program (CFDA 47.084) to develop a novel mixed-mode ocean energy converter. The award will support research and prototype construction from January 2023 through December 2023 to design an offshore renewable energy device that reduces costs through lower weight, simplified assembly and installation, and improved storm resistance compared to...
- This $115,907 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Integrative Activities program (CFDA 47.083) aims to drive research convergence on ocean wave energy conversion for powering remote coastal communities. The project, awarded to East Carolina University, will develop a convergence roadmap, screen and down-select 2-3 lead wave energy converter (WEC) design concepts, and investigate the leading designs through transdisciplinary co-design and optimization. The research...
- This Cooperative Agreement award of $999,323 from the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (CFDA 81.087 - Renewable Energy Research and Development) supports Triton Anchor LLC, a small disadvantaged business, in developing a cost-effective, modular anchoring system for offshore renewable energy platforms. The Triton Anchor is designed to utilize a group of commercial off-the-shelf helical piles within a short caisson to provide high-capacity,...
- The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded a $1,000,000 Project Grant to Old Dominion University (ODU) to fund the "Investigations on Submerged Piezoelectric Ocean Wave Energy Convertors (SPOWECS)" research project under the Basic, Applied, and Advanced Research in Science and Engineering federal grant program (CFDA 12.630). The grant, awarded on April 10, 2025, will support innovative research and technological development in the field of piezoelectric ocean wave energy conversion...
- The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy has awarded a $999,958 Project Grant to North Carolina State University (NC State) for the project "ADAPTIVE STIFFNESS POWER TAKE-OFF FOR BROADBAND WAVE ENERGY CONVERTERS". The grant is funded under the Renewable Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.087) and runs from October 1, 2025 to September 30, 2028. NC State, a prominent research university, will perform advanced research and development...
- The Project Grant award of $1,000,000.00 from the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (CFDA 81.087 - Renewable Energy Research and Development) supports the development of a novel "MARINER" fluid kinetic energy conversion device by North Carolina State University. The MARINER system uses a unique principle of dynamically controlling the sizes of two drag bodies in a flow to generate reciprocating motion and produce power, offering a simpler...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) Project Grant award of $100,000 to the University of California, Berkeley aims to harness offshore renewable energy from high-intensity focused ocean waves using 3D printed undulating porous structures. The project will design and fabricate 3D-printed concrete spatial shell modules to alter seabed topography, increase biodiversity, and capture ocean wave energy. The research seeks to significantly improve wave energy...
ADVANCING WAVE ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES THROUGH OPEN WATER TESTING AT PACWAVE DEHLSEN WILL PRODUCE THE FINAL DESIGN OF THEIR WAVE ENERGY CONVERTER - "CENTIPOD 1P6" FOR MANUFACTURING AND DEPLOYMENT AT PACWAVE. THE "CENTIPOD 1P6" (C1P6) IS A POINT ABSORBER WAVE ENERGY CONVERTER (WEC) COMPRISED OF A SINGLE 6M DIAMETER, SURFACE PIERCING, HEAVING PRIME MOVER "POD", ATTACHED TO A LINEAR ACTING POWER TAKE-OFF (PTO) WITHIN A HOUSING SPAR AND A SUBMERGED, STABLE REFERENCE BUOYANCY "BACKBONE", MOORED WITH PRE-TENSIONED LINES. IN THIS MANNER THE DEVICE IS INTERNALLY SELF-REACTING BUT ALSO GROUND REFERENCED, TO AN EXTENT. A FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLE OF THE WEC IS UTILIZING A LIGHT-WEIGHT PRIME MOVER AND ACTIVE CONTROL TO ACHIEVE TUNING TO THE INCIDENT SEASTATES AND HIGHLY EFFICIENT WAVE POWER CONVERSION. THIS IS VIEWED AS BEING THE MOST COST-EFFECTIVE ROUTE FOR WAVE POWER EXTRACTION (COMPARE WITH THE LARGE MASS PRIME MOVERS REQUIRED FOR MORE PASSIVE TUNING AND THE ENSUING HIGH CAPITAL COSTS AND IMPEDIMENT TO MARINE OPERATIONS, MOORING SYSTEM FORCES AND SO ON) AND GIVES THE HIGHEST PROBABILITY OF MINIMIZING SYSTEM LEVELIZED COST OF ENERGY.
