The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $100,000 Project Grant under the NSF Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to the Regents of the University of California, doing business as the University of California, Berkeley. The grant supports collaborative research to develop a new approach for harnessing offshore renewable energy from high-intensity focused ocean waves using 3D printed undulating porous structures. The research aims to significantly improve wave energy conversion efficiency, reduce the number and size of wave energy capture devices, and minimize disruptions to marine ecosystems. The project brings together architects, mechanical engineers, and materials scientists to design and fabricate 3D-printed concrete spatial shell modules that can alter seabed topography, increase biodiversity, and harness wave energy. The outcomes are expected to have positive societal and economic impacts through the use of decarbonized concrete and lightweight, modular structures capable of resisting extreme conditions. The research will also provide training opportunities for a diverse group of students to become future innovators in sustainable and resilient energy systems.
