The Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), a program under the U.S. Department of Energy's CFDA 81.135 - Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy, has awarded a $2,910,346 Cooperative Agreement to Limelight Steel Inc. This 3-year, $35M ROSIE (Revolutionizing Ore to Steel to Impact Emissions) program aims to develop novel technologies that can produce iron-based products from iron-containing ores and alternative feedstocks without process emissions in the ironmaking step. The funded technologies must demonstrate a pathway to cost-competitiveness with traditional carbothermic blast furnace ironmaking while achieving zero non-biogenic greenhouse gas emissions from the ironmaking process and ultra-low cradle-to-gate lifecycle emissions. Successful projects under this program have the potential to enable a reduction of over 65 million tonnes of annual CO2 emissions in the U.S. (~1% of total) and over 2.9 gigatonnes globally (5.5% of total).
