This award is to provide for biotechnology research and development in Uganda. This program aims at promoting agricultural productivity and ultimately, the incomes of the rural poor. The recipient i.e. Cornell University and consortium partners will provide technical assistance in support of biotechnology research and the development of biotechnology tools to enhance the productivity of the Banana crop in Uganda. This program will also promote the protection of intellectual property rights and biosafety policies necessary for the adoption of bioengineered crops. The proposed implementation scope includes addressing the Black Sigatoka (BS) disease, Banana Bacterial Wilt (BBW) and Fusarium Wilt (FW) diseases, and the nematode pest problem. Overall, this program is consistent with USAID/Uganda s Feed the Future strategic plan, which is also aligned with the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program (CAADP) and the Uganda Agriculture Sector Development Strategy and Investment Plan.
