The Environmental Protection Agency Region 3 awarded a $199,790 cooperative agreement to Coalfield Development Corporation under the Brownfields Job Training Cooperative Agreements program (CFDA 66.815) for the period of July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2025. The award will fund training for unemployed and underemployed residents of Mingo, Summer, and Lincoln counties in West Virginia to obtain skills and certifications for environmental careers.

Specifically, Coalfield Development Corporation will provide workforce readiness training through two components. The WRAPS (Workforce Readiness and Professional Success) program will offer training in HAZWOPER, OSHA, first aid/CPR/AED, environmental justice, and forklift operation. Depending on work assignments, additional trainings may include introductory demolition, asbestos awareness, mold awareness, composting, and lead awareness. The 33-6-3 program will employ trainees as crew members upon completing WRAPS to gain further certifications and education leading to long-term environmental careers. The award aims to place at least fifteen trainees into environmental positions over the course of the three-year project period.
