The National Science Foundation awarded a $3.25 million cooperative agreement to the University of Tennessee under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) from August 1, 2021 to July 31, 2026. The award, titled "Nuclear Physics from Multi-Messenger Mergers," will support research into nuclear astrophysics and modeling the physics of dense matter through a focused research hub involving multiple sub-awardees. Under the leadership of the University of Tennessee, Syracuse University, the University of Houston, Penn State University, and Indiana University will perform research activities as sub-awardees. Work will include simulations of neutron star mergers, incorporating equation of state and neutrino interaction models into numerical relativity codes to predict associated gravitational waves, lightcurves, and nucleosynthesis yields. Theoretical calculations by Indiana University will determine properties of nuclei and neutron stars to advance nuclear astrophysics. Results from this multi-institutional collaboration aim to further the understanding of dense nuclear matter through a multi-messenger approach.
