The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 5 awarded the City of Shawneetown, Illinois a $350,000 Cooperative Agreement under the Brownfields Multipurpose, Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund, and Cleanup Cooperative Agreements program (CFDA 66.818). The award, effective July 1, 2025, through September 30, 2029, funds environmental assessment and cleanup planning activities at brownfield sites within the municipality. Primary deliverables include conducting 16 Phase I and 8 Phase II environmental site assessments, organizing community meetings to facilitate stakeholder engagement, and submitting quarterly progress reports through the EPA's Assessment, Cleanup and Redevelopment Exchange System (ACRES).
Under this agreement, the City of Shawneetown will competitively procure and direct a qualified environmental professional to inventory, characterize, and assess contaminated properties while developing cleanup planning documents. The funded activities are designed to benefit local residents, business owners, and stakeholders by identifying environmental hazards at brownfield sites and establishing the technical foundation necessary for future remediation and redevelopment efforts. No subawards are included in this assistance agreement.
