The Town of Bar Harbor, Maine received a $510,000 Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 1 under the Brownfields Multipurpose, Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund, and Cleanup Cooperative Agreements program (CFDA 66.818), effective May 16, 2025. Funding was provided through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). The agreement authorizes remediation activities on one brownfield site in Bar Harbor in accordance with the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) Section 104(k)(3).
Under this agreement, the Town will conduct environmental site remediation and cleanup activities; competitively procure and direct a qualified environmental professional to conduct environmental site assessments; develop a community involvement plan and administrative record for the site; and submit progress reports and final accomplishment data through the EPA's Assessment, Cleanup and Redevelopment Exchange System (ACRES). Key deliverables include remediation of one brownfield site, one community meeting, one analysis of brownfield cleanup alternatives, and 16 quarterly progress reports. The project is scheduled for completion by September 30, 2029, with anticipated benefits to residents, business owners, and stakeholders in Bar Harbor and surrounding areas. No subrecipients are included in this assistance agreement.
