The Department of Environmental Protection Maine was awarded a $531,690 Cooperative Agreement by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling (SWIFR) Grant Program (CFDA 66.920). The purpose of this award is to enhance Maine's efforts to support long-term planning and data collection related to advancing a circular economy for materials and supporting state-led implementation of post-consumer materials management plans. The key activities funded under this award are: 1) Updating Maine's 2019 Solid Waste Management Plan through 5 stakeholder meetings, and 2) Conducting a statewide waste characterization study to establish a baseline for measuring progress on waste diversion initiatives and assessing the current waste stream to determine best practices. The anticipated deliverables include the updated Solid Waste Master Plan and a Waste Characterization Study Report. The intended outcomes include quantifying the tons of municipal solid waste and construction/demolition debris collected, recycled, composted or managed via other pathways, the material composition of the waste stream, greenhouse gas emissions reductions, and the number of jobs created.
