Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI), a for-profit research and development company, was awarded a $124,921.00 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program Phase I contract by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center. The contract is for the design, development, and demonstration of an innovative high-performance, green, storable hybrid propellant system for use in a high mass fraction launch vehicle for small satellites. The hybrid system utilizes a composite solid fuel technology that enhances fuel regression rate and ignitibility compared to current state-of-the-art hybrid systems. The high energy, high density liquid oxidizer is intended to improve hybrid motor combustion capabilities and reduce logistical operational costs compared to cryogenic oxidizers. This Phase I effort will quantify the efficacy of the hybrid system through subscale motor demonstrations, with the results informing a full-scale system design for a Phase II demonstration.
