Physical Sciences Inc. was awarded a $124,958.00 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center. The contract is for the development of a unique adaptive Venturi system for monopropellant feed systems that can rapidly adjust flow rate to prevent pressure surges and water hammer in spacecraft thrusters. The adaptive Venturi design is intended as a one-to-one replacement for existing cavitating Venturis without adding weight, volume, or power requirements. Under this contract, Physical Sciences Inc. will optimize the Venturi design and measure key performance metrics through full-scale flow testing. If successful, the company plans to develop geometric models for a range of attitude control, reaction control, and divert/insert thruster applications up to 100 lbf in a future SBIR Phase II effort.
