Physical Optics Corporation, a small business prime contractor, was awarded a $124,997 firm-fixed-price contract by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to develop a Penetrating High-Resolution Inspection Tool (PHRUIT) for in-process additive manufacturing (AM) quality control. The PHRUIT system, which is based on X-ray Compton backscatter microscopy, is intended to enable high-resolution subsurface inspection of parts produced via powder bed fusion AM processes. During Phase I, Physical Optics will demonstrate the feasibility of the PHRUIT imaging approach by fabricating and testing a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4 prototype. In Phase II, the company plans to develop a fully functional TRL 6 prototype and demonstrate its non-destructive evaluation capabilities to NASA by testing it with relevant AM systems.
