This is a $124,819.00 STTR Phase I contract awarded by NASA to ATA Engineering, Inc., a small business, for the development of a simulation framework to enable accurate, design-time prediction of combustion instabilities in liquid-fueled rocket engines. The proposed framework will leverage LOCI/CHEM, a massively parallel, multi-physics flow simulation tool, to generate low-order models of combustion and acoustic response that can be solved simultaneously to map acoustic modes to stability characteristics. Phase I will focus on critical additions to LOCI/CHEM's combustion modeling, acoustic model development, and a test plan for experimental validation, culminating in a proof-of-concept demonstration. Phase II will involve an experimental campaign to validate the combustion modeling tools and expand the framework to include multiphase modeling for full-scale liquid rocket engine combustion chambers.
