Q-Peak, Inc., a small business based in Bedford, Massachusetts, was awarded a $124,987 firm-fixed-price contract by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center. The contract is part of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, a set-aside for small businesses. Under this Phase I SBIR contract, Q-Peak will develop a compact, robust, efficient, and radiation-hardened ultraviolet (UV) laser capable of detecting organic molecules through laser desorption techniques. This laser can also be used to advance the development of instruments for in-situ planetary and lunar missions, enabling rapid collection of chemical information through techniques like laser Raman and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. Q-Peak has previous experience providing research and development services related to lasers, optics, and photonics to government agencies like the Department of the Navy, NASA, and the Department of Energy.
