The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program Phase I contract to Diamond Materials, Inc., a self-certified small disadvantaged business. The $124,940 firm-fixed-price contract is for the development of very large area diamond sliding bearings and tribological surfaces with negligible wear in extreme environments, such as those encountered in the exploration of Venus, Mars, the Moon, and other planetary bodies. In Phase I, the contractor will demonstrate the processing and optimization of these bearings and coatings, which are designed to survive high temperatures, low temperatures, and other extreme conditions. In Phase II, the contractor plans to collaborate with a manufacturing company and a bearing manufacturer to scale the new processing technology and fabricate prototype bearings for further performance testing.
