Tethers Unlimited, Inc., a small business, was awarded a $124,931 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to develop a carpal-wrist gimbal payload called "COBRA-BEE" for the Astrobee free-flying robot. COBRA-BEE will provide the Astrobee with a lightweight, integrated end-effector/tool/sensor positioning and pointing system, expanding its capabilities for tasks like target acquisition, tracking, and sensor pointing. The Phase I effort will define requirements and mature the COBRA-BEE technology to Technology Readiness Level 4, with a demonstration using existing hardware. The follow-on Phase II contract will involve developing, testing, and delivering an engineering unit and control software.
