This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Nokomis, Inc., a small business located in Charleroi, Pennsylvania. The $119,571 firm-fixed-price contract is for the development of an anti-collision system to aid in the trajectory management and safe traffic flow of autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations.
The contract supports the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) mandate to equip all aircraft with Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) Out transmitters by January 1, 2020 to enable NextGen air traffic management goals. Nokomis will adapt its ultra-sensitive radio frequency (RF) sensor system, called Hiawatha, to provide detection, identification, and geo-location capabilities to monitor the entire spectral range from 30 MHz to 3 GHz. The goal is to demonstrate an RF-based traffic management and anti-collision avoidance system that can operate in a non-interfering manner with other potential payloads. The Phase I effort will focus on proof-of-concept demonstrations of the Hiawatha airborne system's ability to detect, identify, and locate relevant targets using existing algorithms.
