This SBIR Phase I contract, awarded by NASA's Shared Services Center to Fibertek, Inc., a small business manufacturer, seeks to develop a modular optical ground station architecture capable of scaling to hundreds of gigabits per second (Gbps) data rates from lunar and near-Earth orbits. The objectives are to support NASA's deep space and near-Earth optical communications needs by developing key technologies to dramatically increase data volumes, while adhering to the Space Communications and Navigation (SCAN) network standards. The $124,967 firm-fixed-price contract will also produce a spaceflight high-speed serially concatenated pulse position modulation (SCPPM) data channel encoder and decoder to enable this high-bandwidth optical communications capability. This work aligns with NASA's efforts to mature laser optical technology for space missions with laser and lidar instrument payloads.
