This is a $125,000 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Coolcad Electronics, Inc., a small for-profit company specializing in advanced semiconductor technologies like silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN).
The contract aims to develop and fabricate an integrated sensor device capable of detecting a wide range of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, from extreme UV (1-50 nm) through vacuum UV (50-175 nm) and into deep UV (175-350 nm). The proposed sensor will use SiC as the semiconductor material, combining a photodiode, Schottky diode, and amplifier circuit on a single die to create a monolithic SiC detector/amplifier system. This represents the first time an integrated SiC sensor device will be fabricated, advancing the state-of-the-art in SiC technology with potential applications in areas like satellite systems, electric vehicles, and harsh environment sensing.
