This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Leiden Measurement Technology LLC, a small R&D firm. The contract is for the design and development of the Fluorescence Lifetime Excitation-Emission Spectrometer (FLEXEMS), a compact, field-portable fluorescence spectrometer capable of detecting and identifying trace levels of organics. The instrument will use multiple LEDs to excite fluorescence in samples and employ time-correlated single-photon counting and steady-state photon-counting techniques to quantify the fluorescence properties. This will enable the detection of a wide range of organics, including free aromatic amino acids, biomarkers, PAHs, and porphyrins, at or below the 10-100 ppb level. The total contract value is $124,785, and the performance period ends on December 9, 2016. This contract is designated for total small business participation.
