The U.S. government has awarded a $124,988 Firm Fixed Price contract to Chromologic LLC, a minority-owned small business, to demonstrate a Multifunctional Environmental Digital Scanning Electron Microprobe (MEDSEM) instrument. The MEDSEM will use a two-dimensional array of miniaturized electron probes to transmit high-energy electron beams into a planetary atmosphere, striking solid or liquid surfaces to simultaneously generate compositional data via X-ray fluorescence, backscattered electron spectra, optical spectra, and mass spectra. This 12-month Phase I Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) contract will fund the proof-of-principle experiment using commercial-off-the-shelf components. Contingent on a successful Phase II, the effort will expand to demonstrate the full suite of simultaneous measurement modalities and microfabricate the integrated field-emitter array. The contract is a total small business set-aside awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
