This is a $124,911 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Pioneer Invention, LLC, a small business based in Lakewood, Colorado. The contract is for the development of the Carbonaceous Asteroid Volatile Recovery (CAVOR) system, which extracts water, organic compounds, and other resources from carbonaceous asteroids to support advanced space exploration. The CAVOR system uses thermal processing to recover these valuable materials, which can then be used for propellant production, life support consumables, and manufacturing. Key aspects of the CAVOR system will be demonstrated through a progression of testing from the laboratory to microgravity environments, with the goal of implementing the technology on a Near Earth Asteroid (NEA). This contract is part of NASA's efforts to advance in-situ resource utilization capabilities for future space missions.
