This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Mainstream Engineering Corporation, a for-profit manufacturer and research company based in Rockledge, Florida. The $124,808 firm-fixed-price contract supports the development of a designer thermal control fluid for use in a single-loop variable heat rejection thermal control system for NASA spacecraft.
The contract aims to experimentally evaluate the thermal properties of promising single chemicals and chemical mixtures to determine their overall benefit to a thermal control system in terms of thermal performance and pumping power. In Phase II, Mainstream Engineering will perform more long-term durability, compatibility, and performance studies in a simulated test-loop representative of conditions encountered on NASA spacecraft. This SBIR contract is part of NASA's efforts to address the increasingly intense demands on thermal control systems for vehicles operating beyond low-Earth orbit.
