This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by NASA to Continuum Dynamics Inc., a small business research and development company, for the development and demonstration of a fully-automated, agricultural application process using an unmanned aircraft system (UAS). The goal is to advance the ability of UAS to make real-time decisions based on sensor data with minimal human oversight, which would greatly benefit civilian applications such as agricultural spraying.
The $124,789 fixed-price contract will see the installation and execution of an onboard system on an existing UAS platform, integrating Continuum Dynamics' AGDISP agricultural chemical application software. This Phase I effort will establish the feasibility of performing the required onboard sensing, communication, and software-driven flight path and spraying strategy execution. A successful Phase I demonstration would lead to a Phase II contract for the design, development, and implementation of the fully-automated system, along with a flight demonstration.
