This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Aurora Flight Sciences Corporation, a subsidiary of The Boeing Company. The $124,914 firm-fixed-price contract will fund a comprehensive analysis of the benefits of using hybrid composites, consisting of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), in future aircraft structures. The analysis will leverage Aurora's existing data from developing its Orion unmanned aircraft system, which extensively uses CFRP composites. The goal is to evaluate the potential improvements in weight, lifecycle costs, performance, and reliability that CNTs can provide due to their multifunctionality. Phase II will involve the design, fabrication, and testing of hybrid composite specimens to validate the benefits identified in Phase I. N12 Technologies, a spin-off from MIT, will provide the relevant CNT data to support the analysis. This research aligns with NASA's interest in advancing lightweight, multifunctional composite structures for future aircraft.
