This is a $125,716 firm-fixed-price Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Grainflow Dynamics, Inc. The contract is for the development of a specialized flexible microgravity subsurface drilling and regolith extraction system. This system is intended to selectively extract fine-fraction regolith from depths of 1-3 meters on the Moon or other small bodies, without removing the bulk of the regolith. The project aims to demonstrate the ability to create subsurface excavations of approximately 0.5 cubic meters through a small (~2.6 cm diameter) entrance hole, and utilize microgravity-capable storage and transfer vessels to handle the extracted material. This SBIR Phase I contract has a completion date of December 17, 2015.
