NASA awarded a $124,885 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract to Quest Thermal Group, LLC to design and develop an innovative, lightweight thermal insulation system for cryogenic propellants. The "Multi-Environment MLI (MEMLI)" system is intended to perform and insulate cryogenic propellants in multiple environments, including on Earth, in space, and on the surface of Mars. The insulation system is being developed to support NASA's Evolvable Mars Campaign, Mars...
This is a $128,619 SBIR Phase I contract awarded by NASA to Quest Thermal Group, LLC, a small business, to design and develop an innovative thermal insulation system for cryogenic propellants on launch vehicles. The contract is focused on the "Launch Vehicle Load Responsive Multi-Layer Insulation (LV-LRMLI)" system, which aims to provide high performance thermal insulation during launch ascent, on-orbit, and on the surface of Mars. The Phase I effort will model, design, build, and test...
This is a $129,423.00 firm fixed-price SBIR Phase I contract awarded by NASA to Quest Thermal Group, LLC, a small business based in Arvada, Colorado. The contract is for the design and development of an innovative Vapor Cooled Structure Multi-Layer Insulation (VCSMLI) system that uses boil-off propellant to cool structural elements like skirts and struts, reducing heat leak by nearly 50%. This aligns with NASA's technology roadmap, which identifies zero boil-off storage of cryogenic...
This is a Phase II SBIR contract awarded by NASA to Quest Thermal Group, LLC, a small business firm based in Arvada, Colorado. The contract is for the continued development of Quest's Multi-Environment MLI (MEMLI) technology, a lightweight and high-performance thermal insulation system optimized for Mars surface operations. The MEMLI technology is intended to support NASA's needs for cryogenic propellant storage and liquefaction on the Martian surface. This $727,639 fixed-price contract builds...
This is a SBIR Phase II contract awarded by NASA's Shared Services Center to Quest Thermal Group, LLC, a small business, for the continued development of their Cellular Load Responsive MLI (CLRMLI) technology. CLRMLI is an innovative thermal insulation system designed to reduce or eliminate boil-off of cryogenic propellants, such as liquid hydrogen, for long-duration space missions. This contract, valued at $753,162, supports research and development efforts related to this critical technology...
This is a firm-fixed-price Small Business Innovation Research (STTR) Phase II contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Paragon Space Development Corporation, a small business manufacturer. The contract, valued at $891,279, is for the development and validation of the Cryogenic Encapsulating Launch Shroud and Insulated Upper Stage (CELSIUS) system. CELSIUS is an innovative multi-layer insulation and protection solution for cryogenic propellant tanks and...
This contract is for the design, fabrication, and installation of large-scale multi-layer insulation (MLI) blankets for exploration missions. The goal is to improve the fundamental understanding of MLI systems. The MLI will be applied to a tank, which will then undergo thermal vacuum and reverberant acoustic testing. The contract was awarded to Aerospace Fabrication & Materials LLC, a manufacturer of thermal insulation products, by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA)...
The federal contract award NNX16CC21C was issued by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Quest Thermal Group, LLC, a small business located in Arvada, Colorado. The contract is for the development of a Vapor Cooled Structure MLI (VCSMLI) system, which uses a sealed vapor layer within an Integrated MultiLayer Insulation (IMLI) to provide efficient vapor cooling of cryogenic tank skirts. This technology is intended to support NASA's exploration goals by enabling improved...
This is a $124,946.00 firm fixed-price contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to Quest Thermal Group, LLC, a small business, for the development of a lightweight, high-performance Integrated MultiLayer Insulation (IMLI) dewar for cryogenic balloon instruments under the SBIR Program Phase I. Quest Thermal Group is a world leader in advanced thermal insulation systems and has provided research, prototypes, testing, and thermal insulation...
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has been awarded a $630,082 grant by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to conduct research on cryogenic boiling and heat transfer at low temperatures. Over a three-year period, MIT will lead a team that includes NASA Glenn Research Center and Craft-Tech to carry out reduced gravity experiments using liquid nitrogen. The experiments aim to acquire fundamental data on cryogenic boiling parameters and...

CRYOGENIC PROPELLANTS HAVE THE HIGHEST ENERGY DENSITY OF ANY ROCKET FUEL, AND ARE USED IN MOST NASA AND COMMERCIAL LAUNCH VEHICLES TO POWER THEIR ASCENT. CRYOGENIC PROPELLANTS MUST BE KEPT COLD TO PRESERVE THEM AND PREVENT LOSS VIA BOIL OFF, THEREFORE CRYOGENIC LAUNCH VEHICLES AND SPACECRAFT MUST HAVE THERMAL INSULATION PRESERVING THE CRYOPROPELLANT. PROVIDING GOOD THERMAL INSULATION IS A BALANCING ACT BETWEEN THE INSULATION DESIRED, THE MASS OF THE INSULATION SYSTEM, AND THE ROBUSTNESS OF THE INSULATION. SOFI, FOR EXAMPLE, HAS HIGH HEAT LEAK AND IS NOT ROBUST. QUEST PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT CORP, AND PARTNER BALL AEROSPACE, PROPOSE TO DESIGN, FABRICATE AND TEST INNOVATIVE LAUNCH VEHICLE MLI (LV-MLI), AN INTEGRATED ADVANCED THERMAL INSULATION AND LIGHTWEIGHT AEROSHELL FOR LAUNCH VEHICLE EXPOSED CRYOPROPELLANT TANKS.
