This is a $124,814 firm fixed-price contract awarded by NASA to Interdisciplinary Consulting Corp (IC2), a small business, under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The contract is for the development of a low-profile, tunable acoustic liner for modern aircraft engines that can provide significant noise attenuation at lower frequencies than currently achievable. The innovative approach reduces the resonant frequency, enabling decreased liner depth and weight, while also...
This federal contract award to The Boeing Company, Engineering, Test & Technology Division, under NASA's Glenn Research Center, has a ceiling value of $599,563.00. The objective of the first phase is to develop and assess the feasibility of an adaptive acoustic liner design that can achieve broadband acoustic performance exceeding conventional multi-degree-of-freedom liners in the 1.0 to 6.0 kHz frequency range, while also reducing drag by 80% compared to a hard wall. The second phase will...
This is a $722,085.02 Cooperative Agreement awarded by the Shared Services Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Wichita State University to develop next-generation acoustic liners for quieting aircraft engines. The project aims to create lightweight, minimal thickness liners using advanced cellular porous materials engineered to provide high sound absorption and withstand extreme engine environments. Key objectives include designing, fabricating, and testing...
This is a $749,814 firm-fixed-price Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II contract awarded by the Shared Services Center, a civilian federal agency, to Cornerstone Research Group Inc. (CRG) for the development of adaptive acoustic liners to reduce broadband aircraft noise. The project aims to combine the advantages of adaptive materials with passive acoustic liner designs to enable tuning for specific operational frequencies, addressing challenges with current solutions that are too...
Research In Flight LLC has been awarded a $1,249,999 firm fixed price purchase order contract by the Department of the Air Force Materiel Command Research Laboratory to provide performance and acoustic design optimization tools for cyclonic vortex engines. The contract has a total small business set-aside designation and work will be performed in Auburn, Alabama through July 2025. As the prime contractor, Research In Flight will develop modeling and simulation tools to evaluate aircraft engine...
This is a SBIR Phase I contract awarded by NASA to Spectral Energies LLC, a minority-owned, self-certified small disadvantaged business. The contract is focused on developing innovative technologies and methods for noise prediction to enable acoustic optimization of multi-stream, 3D nozzles to meet the noise goals for NASA's N+2 and N+3 aircraft. The proposed approach extends Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) based models developed at the University of California, Irvine, to accurately...
This is a $748,306 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Spectral Energies LLC, a minority-owned small disadvantaged business in Beavercreek, Ohio. The contract is for the development of a design tool to optimize aircraft engine nozzles for acoustics, with the goal of reducing noise production for future N+2/N+3 generation aircraft. The project builds on the successful results from the Phase I effort,...
This is a Cooperative Agreement award by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to the University of Mississippi. The objective is to establish a multi-institutional aero-acoustics research program and develop a high-fidelity fluid-structure acoustic interaction (FSAI) solver capability. The research focuses on enhancing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational aero-acoustics (CAA) solvers, coupling CFD, CAA, and computational structural...
This is a $165,135 cost-plus-fixed-fee delivery order contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Langley Research Center to the National Institute of Aerospace Associates (NIA), a non-profit research institute. The contract is for the further development, implementation, and validation of an efficient high-fidelity time domain acoustic scattering prediction tool capable of analyzing a complete aircraft over a full frequency range. The contract has two...
This firm fixed price SBIR Phase I contract was awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to Scientific Simulations, LLC, a small business software development company. The objective is to demonstrate the feasibility of using a coupled Reynold's-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and NASA JENO turbulent noise prediction methodology to optimize far-field acoustic objectives for future commercial supersonic nozzle designs. The $121,067 award will fund...

NUMERICAL AND PHYSICAL MODELING OF THE RESPONSE OF RESONATOR LINERS TO INTENSE SOUND AND HIGH SPEED GRAZING FLOW AN INNOVATIVE RESEARCH PROGRAM IS PROPOSED THAT NUMERICALLY AND PHYSICALLY MODELS THE RESPONSE OF RESONATOR LINERS TO INTENSE SOUND AND HIGH SPEED GRAZING FLOW. THE RESEARCH PROGRAM IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS. PART 1 ADDRESSES THE FEASIBILITY OF PERFORMING DIRECT NUMERICAL SIMULATION (DNS) OF THE SOUND AND FLOW FIELDS OF THE FOLLOWING: (I) ONE-SLIT AND TWO-SLIT RESONATORS IN A NORMAL INCIDENCE IMPEDANCE TUBE, (II) ADJUST AND MODIFY THE COMPUTATIONAL ALGORITHM AND MESH DESIGN TO ALLOW THE CODE TO PERFORM HIGH TEMPERATURE SIMULATIONS, AND (III) USE THE SIMULATION CODES TO INITIATE A STUDY OF THE PERFORMANCE OF HIGH TEMPERATURE LINERS. PART 2 DEVELOPS THE FOLLOWING: (IV) A GRAZING FLOW MULTI-SLIT ORIFICE RESONATOR IMPEDANCE MODEL, (V) A GRAZING FLOW 1-DOF MULTI-CIRCULAR ORIFICE RESONATOR IMPEDANCE MODEL AND (VI) A 2-DOF NON-GRAZING FLOW MULTI-CIRCULAR ORIFICE RESONATOR IMPEDANCE MODEL. THE RESEARCH PROGRAM WAS MOTIVATED, IN PART, BY HIGH OIL PRICES THAT PLACE EVER GREATER DEMANDS UPON THE NEAR-TERM NEED TO PROVIDE AIRCRAFT ENGINE ACOUSTIC ENGINEERS WITH REASONABLY ACCURATE TOOLS TO DESIGN OPTIMIZED LINERS AND THE LONG-TERM NEED TO DEVELOP SOPHISTICATED COMPUTATIONAL CODES TO PROVIDE PHYSICAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE INTERACTION BETWEEN INCIDENT INTENSE SOUND AND GRAZING FLOW ON RESONATOR LINERS
